Greetings,
IT’S YOUR
VOICE
COUNCIL
19/SEATTLE
LOCAL ELECTIONS
UPDATE
MAY 1, 2008
Some of you may have already received
your Nomination Ballot in the mail. This is the first step in the election
process required to fill the Local Executive Council (LEC)
President position for the 2008-2011 term that remains vacant
after the full election process we ran earlier this year. The Nomination Ballot
has historically caused a bit of confusion, and this will be the
first in my 20+ years that has had only one position on it,
making it perhaps even more so.
As a refresher, this is the process that
establishes who will be reflected on the Election Ballot. The requirement is two
fold. Firstly, the
member must have received at least two nominations via this
process, and secondly they must commit to serve. The Nomination Ballot
mailing includes the Nomination Ballot itself and its associated
Ballot Envelope, a Commitment to Serve card, as well as a return
mail envelope for one or both as applicable. Procedurally speaking,
here are a couple of things to remember, sent to us from our
Membership Department in the International Office, that reflect
some of the common mistakes seen in the nomination processes
across AFA.
·
Place the ballot inside the smaller Ballot
envelope.
·
Do NOT use the blue Commitment to Serve card to
indicate candidate nomination, use the white Nomination
Ballot.
·
If you are returning a blue Commitment to Serve card
because you are willing and able to serve in the LEC President
position if nominated and elected, do NOT place it in the Ballot
envelope, this will invalidate both the Nomination Ballot and
the Commitment to Serve.
Place it in the return mail envelope along with the
sealed Ballot envelope containing your completed Nomination
Ballot. Also please
remember you can, and should, nominate yourself if you willing
and able to serve as LEC
President.
A couple of things to keep in mind to
help us insure we have an LEC President-elect by the
July
1, 2008 start date of the next
term.
·
Please do not nominate anyone that has not confirmed
to you an interest and ability to serve in the
office.
·
If you are able and interested in running for office,
return a blue Confirmation to Serve Ballot in the return mail
envelope with your sealed Ballot
envelope.
·
Be honest.
If a coworker asks if you are willing and able to serve
and you are not ...please tell them
so.
We will post resumes for those members
who would like to be nominated and are interested and able in
running for and serving in the three year term as LEC President
on the Seattle page
of the MEC website, alaskamec.org, (the password,
in case you have misplaced it, is afa). If you are interested
please send yours to kwells@alaskamec.org. Please remember that
these are both Department of Labor regulations, as well as
AFA-CWA Constitutional regulations that apply to the election
process, and that the use of Company mailboxes and email systems
for campaigning related communication is
prohibited.
If everyone receiving two or more
nominations has also returned a Commitment to Serve card we can
begin the Election Process immediately after the Nomination
Ballot count date of May 28, 2008. Again this
is the only way we can insure an LEC President-elect by the
July
1, 2008 term start. If there are
members receiving two or more nominations that have not returned
a Commitment to Serve, pursuant to the Constitution and By-laws,
the International Office will contact them via phone and email
if available. They
then have up to fourteen days to respond. If you are nominated
and have not returned a Commitment to Serve please return the
call or email as soon as possible so that the election process
may continue.
The above fourteen-day window of time
will mean the difference between having an LEC President-elect
before the term begins or not. This is very important as we will
be holding an interim AFA-CWA Board of Directors Meeting
July
8-10, 2008 in
Milwaukee
WI. As you will recall, the
Board of Directors is comprised of the LECP from all of our
AFA-CWA carriers.
Between that and the commencement of our negotiations
process in preparation for our early opener next spring, our
LECP-elect will really be hitting ground
running!
If you need a replacement Nomination
Ballot or any of the associated documents please contact one of
us.
