Greetings,
In the Wake of a
Historic House Vote on FMLA, Legislation Appears Headed for
Certain Defeat In the Senate If We Don't Take
Action!
I
wanted to update the AFA-CWA Board of Directors on our Family
and Medical Leave (FMLA) legislation. As I sat down to write
this update it was good news from the U.S. House of
Representatives. As most of you know, by a vote of 402-9, the
House approved our landmark legislation for a technical
correction to FMLA. While this is great news and is the
byproduct of countless hours by some of our legislative
activists, the reality of Washington came crashing down on
several lobbyists (including myself) this week while making the
rounds in the Senate. What we were told is
that we must get at least 5 more Republicans to co-sponsor the
legislation in the Senate for it to be
considered. While that may not seem like a large number,
time is not on our side. With a legislative calendar that has a
very limited number of days left for consideration, now is the
time to kick our grassroots mobilization into high gear. One
office basically told us today that we have until the end of
July to get this done. If we, as leaders, do
nothing this legislation is dead. The legislative clock is
ticking.
This
is not an update to "hit the panic button" but a "call to arms"
that if this is going to happen and is a priority for our
members and leadership one thing, and one thing only must
happen. Flight attendants must
call their Senators and tell them that they need to co-sponsor
this bill! Phone calls directly to members of
Congress are the heart and soul of every piece of important
legislation. AFA-CWA members need you to give them the tools to
make this happen. With hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of
members in every state we need to make our voices heard. What it
will take is very clear. A letter and/or phone call directly to
a member's home from their local leadership with the contact
information and a script on what to say to the office is what is
needed now.
Below
is a list of important Senators who must be contacted by all of their constituents
concerning this legislation. I would actually encourage members
to call their Senators daily until they do co-sponsor S. 2059.
If you have a member who lives in a state with a Republican
Senator, it is very important that they hear from that member.
As well, there are many Democrat Senators who need to hear from
members that are currently missing from the list of co-sponsors.
Sample script is included as well.
If you have any questions, please call or
email Shane Larson at 202.434.0573 or slarson@afanet.org. Your action and
leadership is needed today!
In Solidarity,
Alin Boswell

My name is ________ and I am calling as a
voter in your state and a flight attendant. I am asking that the
Senator cosponsor S. 2059, the Airline Flight Crew Technical
Corrections Act.
This bill is a priority for all flight
crewmembers and for me.
I would really appreciate the Senator's
support. Again, tell the Senator to please cosponsor S.
2059.
