Protect LA City Workers' Privacy
Protect Our Privacy
Write a Letter to Controller Laura Chick Telling Her Vulnerable City Workers Shouldn't Have Their Privacy Invaded
Recently the Daily News published a series of articles blaming city workers for Los Angeles' current budget crisis and posted their salaries online. The newspaper's data base includes all city workers' names, departments, classifications and pay range. Many City workers have legitimate reasons for identity protection and need to be able to expect a level of privacy, particularly victims of domestic violence. Those members now feel that their trust has been violated and their privacy invaded.
Local 3090 President Alice Goff has written Controller Chick a strong letter objecting to the way the Controller's office turned over information to the newspaper, stating that the local received no forewarning and therefore were unable to protect our most vulnerable members from possible harm. When the same situation came up with the Orange County Register, the county management worked with AFSCME to ensure that sensitive names of members were withheld.
Please write to Controller Chick today voicing your concern about invasion of privacy of city workers.

Subject: Protect Our Privacy
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As a member of Local 3090, I am deeply disturbed that my privacy and the privacy of many of my fellow co-workers has been invaded. I am especially disappointed that your office didn't think enough of City employees to even consider alerting us to the fact that a request to make our information public from the Daily News was in the works.
Many City workers have legitimate reasons for identity protection and need to be able to expect a level of privacy. In this case, I feel the way in which the information was released violated our trust. As a result, victims may have been exposed. There are ways to enforce the law while protecting public employees.
It's possible in the future to work with us to withhold sensitive names. I urge you to please consider us in the future.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
