Please support House Bill 1702

The SERS alternative formula is in place for state employees who are in high-risk occupations. The statute has been amended several times to include occupations that meet this threshold of high-risk. In 2001, the statute was amended to include "state highway maintenance workers" or highway maintainers for inclusion in the alternative formula under SERS. Teamster and IFT members in similar positions were not part of this legislation despite the fact that they perform similar services and are subjected to identical hazards as the highway maintainers.

House Bill 1702 would allow automotive mechanics with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Toll Highway Authority mechanics and sign hangers, Central Management Services and the Illinois Department of Agriculture to participate in the SERS alternative formula.

The bill is currently being held in the House Rules Committee and may be called for a vote in the Illinois House during the current veto session.
