Stop SEPTA Fare Increase & Service Cuts~

STOP SEPTA'S FARE HIKE AND SERVICE CUTS!

Earlier this year the SEPTA Board vetoed a plan to raise fares by 20% and shut down weekend service in Philadelphia.  This was bad enough, but now, it has gotten much, much worse!  On Dec. 16, at 3 pm, SEPTA board members will vote on whether fares should be raised by 50% (to $3, in two phases), and to cut all trip times and night services.

We must act now to stop these cuts.  Activists in Pittsburg, PA have already shown that workers and riders can stop this attack on our transit system by pressuring politicians to "uphold the veto!"  Please send the following message to Councilwoman Anna Verna, Senator Vince Fumo and Representative Dwight Evans.

Subject: STOP SEPTA SERVICE CUTS AND FARE INCREASES!!!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

STOP SEPTA'S FARE HIKE AND SERVICE CUTS!

As a citizen of the City of Philadelphia I urge you to oppose SEPTA's plan to raise fares and slash services. The SEPTA Board's "Alternative 6," which will raise fares by 50% and diminish nighttime and weekend service, is bad public policy that will undermine our transit system.

Alternative 6 will have an enormous adverse impact on our entire City, particularly on working people who depend upon SEPTA to travel between home and their jobs. Particularly hard-hit will be service sector and hospitality workers, many of whom work night shifts. Service cutbacks will add travel time for everyone and may make it impossible for many workers to get home to their families. Needless to say, 50% fare increases will seriously impact every SEPTA rider's finances.

We believe that the Legislature and Governor can solve SEPTA's funding problems when they return to Harrisburg in January. There is no urgent need to rush to raise fares and slash services now. Please do everything in your power to insure that the current SEPTA Board veto is upheld.

The livelihood of working people in our City depends upon a vital Center City and regional economy, and that this in turn depends upon an efficient public transit system. SEPTA's Alternative 6 will hurt working people and the City of Philadelphia as a whole. I therefore urge you to oppose SEPTA's plan to raise fares and slash services.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

At the board meeting on Thursday, December 16th, SEPTA  is planning to vote to
raise fares and stop running at night. The board has two options 1) vote to uphold the demise of our transit system and adjust fares (%50 increase starting Jan. 23 to $3) and routes (night routes and weekends cut by %50) according to the massively cutback budget given to them by the State Legislature or, 2)vote to uphold the previous SEPTA Board veto to raise the fares and route closures.THEN, THERE IS THE THIRD OPTION 3) Riders and workers shut the meeting down in protest (no vote, veto carries).

DECEMBER 16TH IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO SAVE NIGHT TIME SERVICE AND STOP THE
