Act now to save SEPTA!

How will we get to work?

How will we get to church?

How will we get to school?

SEPTA faces a budget deficit of between $62 million.  State Representatives have the power to get the money that our transit system needs.  Our State Representatives have assured us that if they don’t get the money in the next few weeks the buses, trains and trolleys of Pennsylvania will have to cut out routes and the number of trips that they take.  The city of Philadelphia will be closed to out-of-state travelers who use the trains on the weekends.  Additionally, SEPTA will raise fares to $3 per ride!

Every major public transit system in the country is heavily subsidized by city and state governments. But SEPTA receives a smaller subsidy than most of the other, large public transit systems.

We must now demand that fares not increase, that no routes or trips be cut and that Pennsylvania officials created a dedicated funding source that guarantees a sound transit system.

Subject: Dedicated funding for SEPTA, NOW!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to urge you to support sufficient, dedicated, and predictable funding stream for public transit throughout Pennsylvania.

Public transit is important to everyone in Pennsylvania, riders, businesses, workers, students, senior citizens and the disabled. Without public transit, how will we get to work, to school and to church? Public transit is even important to those who drive. Without public transit, tens of thousands of additional cars will be clogging our roads and bridges. And public transit is also important to the Environment. Air quality will suffer if more cars hit our roads.

Public Transit in Pennsylvania has been under funded for too many years. In 9 of the last 11 years general fund support for public transit did not keep pace with inflation.

The result is that public transit across the state is facing a crisis. SEPTA proposes to raise fares by 40% and eliminate 20 % of service to eliminate its deficit. Other transit agencies are making proposals that are equally devastating.

Without your help, public transit will decimated in Pennsylvania. The economy of the entire state will be thrown into a recession.

Please don't let this happen. Do what ever you can to ensure that Public Transit receives the sufficient dedicated predictable funding it needs.

Sincerely,
