PMA, Security Guards Deserve Sick Days

Philadelphian's have expressed their moral values for the way that we expect workers to be treated when City Council passed the Living Wage Ordinance.    The Philadelphia Museum of Art has taken more than $10 million in tax payer money and many millions more in donated facilities over the last decade.  Depite the museums reliance on the support of Philadelphians, the PMA leaders scoff at our moral values.  The PMA is using your tax money to harm workers.  This Labor Day, stand up to the PMA with the POWR campaign...

Subject: No Tax Money To Exploit Security Guards

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Dear Leader of the Philadelphia Museum of Art,

I am writing to express my moral outrage at the way that security guards are treated at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and to demand that you take immediate action to fix the situation.

Like most Philadelphians I am proud of our world-class museum. I am glad that the City of Philadelphia supports the museum by contributing a portion of the taxes I pay to support it. In the last decade, Philadelphians have contributed more than $10 million in direct subsidizes and many millions more in donated land and facilities to the PMA.

Like most Philadelphians, I morally oppose the mistreatment of workers. Philadelphia has expressed these moral values by passing a living wage ordinance that is among the most progressive in the nation.

The ordinance states that every city-supported employer needs to pay employees at least 150% of the federal or state minimum wage (which ever is higher) and provide full-time workers with benefits. The City of Philadelphia contributes enough resources and donations to the PMA to cover the entire $ million security expence, yet guards are only paid $10.16/hour (less that the $10.67 living wage) and don't even have paid sick leave.

This Labor Day, I want the PMA to meet the moral expectations that have been so clearly laid out by the citizens of the city of Philadelphia by making sure that security guards get paid sick leave, benefits and a living wage. The PMA should get no city resources until they meet the standards expressed int the Living Wage Ordinance.
