MASTER EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING
AUG’09
Your MEC met in Dallas, August 11-13 to
conduct business brought before it.
On August 11, 2009 elections
were held to fill positions at the MEC level. The following
members were elected to represent you:
MEC President- Robert Barrow,
(DFW)
MEC Grievance Chair - Carol Harper,
(DFW)
MEC System Board Alternate - Debra Sutor,
(ORD)
These members are to be congratulated and
we thank them for their willingness to serve.
The following members also shared a
willingness to serve in these positions and we would like to
thank them for their dedication and look forward to their future
involvement in representation of the AFA/CWA Membership
For MEC President: Ron Billman (ORD), Joe
Oxendine (MIA)
For System Board Alternate: Denise
Williamson (JFK)
Your Contract Negotiations Team was
present and provided bullet points on changes we would like to
see in our next agreement with the Company. These were developed
after receiving your input through the recent contract survey.
Of our 1700 Flight Attendants, over 300 surveys were returned.
This provided valuable information on changes you feel should be
addressed in our next contract. The team further reported that
they will be prepared with a contract opener by the amendable
date of October 27, 2009

MEC Officers, Local Council Presidents
and MEC Committee Chairs also provided their reports.
The MEC Webmaster reported that your MEC
website is being restructured and simplified to provide you with
up to date information on the activities of your Union. The
address for your MEC website is http://www.afaeagle.com/
There is valuable information that will assist
you at this site and you are encouraged to visit frequently to
stay informed.
Government Affairs Committee Chair, Mary
Oswald, reported that the FMLA corrections act (s.1422) has run
into some problems in the Senate and needs your input. A renewed
effort is underway.
Call your Senator and demand they co-sponsor this
important legislation. Local GAC Chairs and committee members
will be in the crew lounges with contact information and your
support is vital.
The Employee Assistance
Program (EAP) is in need of representatives at all bases. This
position is of special importance in that it provides special
assistance to your peers in time of need. If you feel that this
is an area that you can be of help or would like further
information please contact your Local EAP Chair or
President.
The Chair of MEC Air, Safety and Health
is vacant and an election will be held
August 23, 2009. Each candidate will be
allowed the opportunity to interview with the MEC for this
position. If interested in serving please contact your
Local President for more information. Resumes should be submitted by 22 August to
MEC Vice-President Deb McDougald dsnazzy1@gmail.com.
A vacancy on the Contract Negotiation
Team also exists and will be filled by Special election on the
27th of August. Resumes should be submitted to the
MEC President Robert Barrow afamec@sbcglobal.net no later than 25 August.
Interviews will also be scheduled and if you need further
information please contact your Local
President.
Every member is encouraged to communicate
with your Union leadership when you have questions, concerns and
suggestions. If your elected leadership is unaware of issues
that affect the membership these concerns cannot be resolved.
Your active participation in your Union is imperative in
continuing our goal of total unity within our organization.
During the upcoming contract negotiations this is especially
important.
