Working Women, AFL-CIO

Dear Union Activist:

You are invited to the National Summit on Diversity in Our Union Movement to be held July 23, 2005 in Chicago prior to the AFL-CIO convention.

This important summit, which is a part of an ongoing conversation on diversity within our union movement, is being convened by the AFL-CIO and the Labor Coalition for Community Action, a coalition of six AFL-CIO constituency groups: APALA, APRI, CBTU, CLUW, LCLAA and PAW.

The National Summit on Diversity is being called to explore issues of critical importance to labor's future, diversity and full inclusion in the labor movement. To build on the tremendous diversity of its membership and grow, the labor movement must reflect that diversity in its leadership bodies, in its political and organizing efforts, and in its support for organizations and issues that advance civil, human and women's rights. This summit will explore ways to promote diversity in the labor movement, and will include discussions of recent diversity proposals that may be considered at the AFL-CIO convention.

The announcement and hotel information for the summit, to be held July 23, 2005 at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, are attached.  To register, please visit www.aflcio.org/conference.  All those attending the National Summit on Diversity are also encouraged to register for and attend the "Building Power for Working Families Conference" which continues on July 24th.

This National Summit is part of an important dialogue taking place among AFL-CIO union membersPlease forward to your UNION Brothers and Sisters only.

I look forward to seeing you in Chicago.

Sincerely,

Rosalyn Pelles, AFL-CIO Civil, Human and Women's Rights Dept. Director
