Collective Bargaining: Public Employees' Voice@Work

End the Ban on Public Employee Bargaining
Current law bans collective bargaining for all public servants in North Carolina, including those who pick up our trash, deliver our children to school, and even those who lay down their lives for us in the line-of-duty.
Yet, public employees are denied the same negotiation rights as employees working in the private sector.

Subject: Public Servants Deserve Workplace Rights
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I believe that firefighters, police officers, teachers and other public employees deserve respect in our words and our actions and House Bill 1583 does just that.
I am asking that you stand behind the public servants who stand behind all of us everyday by granting them the right to collectively negotiate with their employer. It appalls me that NC is one of only two states that deny public workers this right and treat our public employees with such blatant disregard and disrespect - especially those who teach our children, protect us from crime and put their lives on the line.
As you consider this important bill, it is important to remember that this legislation does not mandate collective bargaining nor does it allow in any way for public employees to strike.
I look forward to your leadership in bringing North Carolina in line with the rest of the country. These everyday heroes deserve the same rights as other workers in our state. I look forward to your support for HB 1583.
Sincerely,

It's common to hear our policymakers talk about the true North Carolina heroes in our communities: the firefighter who rushes into a building to save the lives of complete strangers, the police officer who patrols the streets at night or the teacher or the social worker who goes the extra mile for that child in need.
We talk about how much these public servants deserve our admiration and respect – and we couldn't agree more. Now it's time to show those who give so much how much we do respect them. We want them to be afforded the same rights and responsibilities as other North Carolina workers – the right to decide for themselves if they would like to be collectively represented in negotiations with their employers.

A strong and growing coalition of North Carolina citizens and organizations - from child advocacy organizations to churches - are calling on you to help those who help us everyday.
