Dear AFSCME Brothers and Sisters,
We've been saying it all along,
but today we're saying it even louder: our nation
deserves nothing less than quality, affordable health care for
everyone.
Here's what's
happening. On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee passed
its health care reform bill and it is deeply flawed. It
is not the real health care reform that working families
need — reform that is a moral and
economic imperative.
Fortunately, there are cures for what ails the Senate Finance
Committee bill:
- Affordability: Working families should not
be forced to spend money they don't have. Penalizing those
who do not obtain coverage only adds insult to injury.
- A public health insurance option: 68% of
Americans agree we need a robust public option that provides
real competition to insurance companies and lowers costs.
- No taxes on health plans: Reform should not
be funded on the backs of workers whose plans have high costs
for reasons that have nothing to do with wasteful spending or
unnecessary care.
- Real employer responsibility: All but the
smallest employers should have to provide health care coverage
or contribute to a fund to pay for subsidies for their workers.
Please add your name to AFSCME's petition to the U.S. Senate
for real health care reform — nothing less. When you do, a copy
will go to your senators.

We're closer than we've ever been to health insurance reform.
We can't afford to let the insurance companies and their
lobbyists win by passing the Senate Finance
Committee's flawed bill. The stakes are just too high
for middle class families. In
solidarity,
