Fall 2009 VLOA Package

Dear Fellow Flight Attendants,

Today the company is announcing a reduction in our workforce.   The amounts they are seeking through Voluntary Leaves Of Absence are a total of 300 positions.  It is the hope of the company and the union that these numbers can be reached through the VLOA Program.  The leaves will be broken down into two options:

1)      150 Flight Attendants -  4 month leave beginning August 5th returning December 1st  2009

2)      150 Flight Attendants -  16 month leave beginning August 5th returning December 1st 2010

Since July 1st 2008 your union representatives have diligently worked with the company to find a solution to curtail a reduction in our work force. Some of the options presented to the company are as follows:

· Paid medical coverage (full and/or partial)

· Early retirement package

· Line sharing (line holder and reserves alike)

· Reduction in average line value

· Temporary cap  of high time flying

· Breaking up of extended VLOA (option to a VLOA package)

· Alternating months of VLOA (would achieve maintaining medical benefits)

Unfortunately all of these proposals were denied by the company for various reasons.  The proposals the company have accepted are:

· Paying out of vacation within VLOA months at the beginning of the leaves

· Allowing Line holders to drop below 40 hours

· Allowing Reserves to auto “the day before”

· Agreed to resume the practice of personal leaves

If you are in a position which would enable you to participate in the VLOA Program, we as your union representatives want to applaud your sacrifice and generosity.  Every VLOA participant will ensure another Flight Attendants security.  Now more than ever, we need to stand united together as a union to uphold solidarity.
