AFA Continues to Oppose the Company’s Plan to Prorate VLOA Vacations

On Monday, the Company put out a Voluntary Leave of Absence Question and Answer communication to all Flight Attendants.  In the Q & A, Company management have stated that they will prorate the vacations of those flight attendants who decide to take the Voluntary Leave of Absence.

Your MEC communicated to the Company that we disagree with the Company’s position on proration of vacation for Flight Attendants taking VLOAs.  We believe proration of VLOAs is in violation of a major arbitration award AFA won in 2004. For remedy, the Company was required to cease and desist from this practice and to make all affected flight attendants whole by granting them their full vacation days.

The Company has refused to modify its position, relying on a different interpretation of the arbitrator’s decision.  AFA’s position has not changed and we continue to demand that management follow past practice and the arbitrator’s award and refrain from the proration of those flight attendants who choose the Voluntary Leaves of Absence.  We believe Flight Attendants should not be penalized for helping avoid furloughs.  If the Company insists on prorating vacation, AFA will file a grievance over this issue.
