National
Call-In Day on Healthcare Reform
Next Tuesday, July
28,2009, members of labor unions throughout the country will be
calling their elected Senators and Legislators to voice our
needs regarding Health Care Reform. Join the movement and tell
Congress that Health Care Reform can’t
wait! It’s easy to do.
You can call
both Senators and your Congressperson in a few minutes.
National Health Care
Call-In Day Instructions -- 4 Easy Steps
1. Call:
877-264-4226 2. Once connected: Press 1 to be
connected to your Senators Press 2 to be connected to your
Representative. 3. Then you will be asked for
your 5 digit zip code. In the case of the Senators, you will
pick which one you want to be connected to 4. Leave your
message. If you get a live person, say it loud and
proud. If you get a voice mail, say it just as loud and
proud. Your opinion will be counted. That’s
it. It takes a couple of minutes. You have to make
three calls if you want to get both Senators and your Rep, but
all three calls take less than 10 minutes. Here is a sample
script: "This is ___________________. I am union member
from (your town). We need health care reform now. My
family and I are counting on the Senator (or
Representative). [For Reps:] I urge Rep _____________
to support HR3200.
[For Senators:]
Health Care Can’t Wait. We need action on the health
care reform bills.
AFA Golf
Tournament Raises $1540 for Pantry of Love
On Saturday July 18, 2009
AFA held a Golf Tournament Fundraiser at Sundland Village Golf
Course with proceeds going toward AFA’s “The Pantry
of Love”. The 21 golfers enjoyed a day on the
links. Most of the golfers were fellow flight attendants,
their friends and family along with several golfers from US
Airways Corporate included Bob Hemphill, Rick Carpenter, Stacy
Benson, and Mark Stelzer. AFA would like to thank those
golfers for supporting the AFA Pantry of Love.
AFA received a $15
donation for each golfer who participated. Additional donations
were made raising the total donations to $1540.00. AFA would
like to take a moment to thank US Airways, President Scott Kirby
for his generous donation, and US Airways COO, Robert Isom and
Senior Vice President Public Affairs, C.A. Howlett for their
donations to the to AFA’s Pantry of Love. These donations
are a wonderful step toward maintaining the pantry, which
assists flight attendants in this time of economic need.
Thanks to all of you who
came out to support this worthwhile cause.

US Airways to
Introduce Onboard "Wi-Fi" Service

Last Thursday, US Airways
announced a partnership with Aircell to provide Wi-Fi service
onboard a segment of the US Airways fleet. The Company
announcement is printed below. In a meeting with Vice President
of InFlight, Hector Adler, AFA leaders were briefed on some
additional details regarding the Wi-Fi service:
US Airways is partnering
with Gogo Inflight Internet Service to provide Wi-Fi on 51 A321
aircraft.
First aircraft
installation is anticipated to be completed by January
2010.
Gogo is a "no-touch" required system that
automatically turns itself on and off at 10,000 feet.
No
action is required on the part of the Flight Attendants to
collect fees - it's done by the passenger over the Internet
using their credit card.
Gogo is available for purchase
and ranges in price from $5.95 to $12.95 depending on the length
of the flight.
Onboard announcements will be developed to
inform passengers when they are on an aircraft equipped with
Gogo InFlight Internet.
Seatback cards will provide
information on how to connect to Gogo.
Gogo does not
enable cell phones to be used - it is a "Wi-Fi" system, not
cellular.
A phone will be installed in the aft galley to
support the system, and will be preprogrammed with operations
numbers, such as MedLink.
F/A materials will be
distributed closer to system installation on the first
aircraft.
F/As will not provide technical support to
passengers, but rather proactively direct them to all of the
tools available from Gogo to assist with technical/log-on
issues.
The Union will be
monitoring the progress of this "service enhancement" to make
sure the Wi-Fi capability does not hinder our safety or service
duties onboard the aircraft. Although the system is not
cellular, we want to insure that the use of net-based phone
services cannot be accessed.
Wi-Fi While You
Fly With US Airways
July 23, 2009
Earlier this
morning, we issued the following press release announcing a new
partnership with Aircell to provide Gogo Inflight Internet
service including Web, Instant Messaging, email and VPN access
to our fleet of A321s. More information about our new Wi-Fi
product can be found in this afternoon's issue of
AboutUS.
US Airways is turning
aircraft into Wi-Fi 'hotspots' by partnering with Aircell to
provide Gogo® Inflight Internet service beginning in early
2010. Full Internet access including Web, Instant Messaging,
email and VPN access will be available for purchase to
passengers with laptops, smartphones and other Wi-Fi enabled
devices.
"Gogo Inflight Internet
will allow our customers to make the most of their flying time
by catching up on work or relaxing and surfing the
Internet. This is an exciting new option for our
passengers that we believe will enhance their travel
experience," said Andrew Nocella, senior vice president,
Marketing and Planning.
Gogo will initially be
installed on US Airways A321 aircraft, flying select domestic
routes. A map detailing those routes can be found at www.usairways.com.
And later next year, customers will be able to see if Wi-Fi is
available on a specific flight by looking for the Wi-Fi icon
while booking their flight on usairways.com.
The pricing for Gogo
Inflight Internet on US Airways will be announced closer to the
launch date. Customers will be able to choose service from
Aircell's standard pricing structure, which currently ranges
from $5.95 to $12.95, depending on the length of flight and type
of Wi-Fi enabled device used.
"Gogo is for anyone who
wants to make plane time their time," said Jack Blumenstein,
president and chief executive officer of Aircell. "Whether
you want to stay connected to the office, your family or
friends; whether you want to work, play or learn; Gogo is for
you. We look forward to working with US Airways to bring the
world to its passengers."
More information about US
Airways' new Gogo Inflight Internet service can be found online
at www.usairways.com
and www.gogoinflight.com.
