September 11 Remembrance Services and Gatherings

The following is a list of September 11 Remembrance Services and Gatherings, published by the Association of Flight Attendants of United Airlines. 

Tempe, Arizona - Sixth Annual Tempe Healing Field

The free community memorial at Tempe Beach Park will feature a field of American flags, one for every victim and emergency responder lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Healing Field begins Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 13. Visitors are welcome from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
In addition to the flag display, a brief commemoration - including a reading of the names of the first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001 - will be held Friday, Sept. 11 at 5:40 a.m. A candlelight vigil with music, prayer and guest speakers will occur the same day at 7 p.m.

AFA Council 66 will hold a brief commemoration at 6:00 pm on Friday, Sept. 11, reading the names of Flight Attendants and crew lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

United Blood Services will also be conducting blood drives on Friday, Saturday and Sunday inside their bloodmobile at Tempe Beach Park. Walk-in donors are welcome, or you can make an appointment online
at www.bloodhero.com and enter “9/11” as the sponsor code.

New York City - World Trade Center Site Memorial Ceremony and Remembrance

Date: September 11, 2009
Time: 8:40 am – 12:30 pm

This is the official New York City observance of the anniversary of 9/11 and the event will take place at the World Trade Center site on the morning of Friday, September 11th.

New York City - 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial Annual Floating Lanterns Ceremony

Date: September 11, 2009
Location: Pier 40 at West Houston Street and the Hudson River

The New York Buddhist Church (NYBC) will present a floating lantern ceremony led by Rev. TK Nakagaki.  This ancient custom is a symbolic representation of respecting the lives that have gone before us and also represents a light of hope for peace and harmony. This event is free and open to the public.

September 11 Remembrance at Trinity Church

Date: September 11, 2009
Time: 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm
Location: Trinity Church, Broadway at Wall Street
The historic Trinity Church will open at midnight for an all-night vigil and labyrinth walk.  AA Day of Remembrance service will take place from 12:30 – 2:00 pm.

The September Concerts

Date:  September 11, 2009

The September Concerts are a series of free concerts held in locations around New York City and around the world to fill the skies with music every September 11th.  In 2008, more than 100 concerts were held in New York City.  For 2009, concert venues will include Central Park, the New York Public Library, the 42nd Street subway station, Rockefeller Center, Washington Square Park, the World Financial Center, and many more.

September 11 National Day of Service

In March, Congress passed legislation to officially designate September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.  This year, observe September 11th by helping people in need.  Take the MyGoodDeed.com pledge to honor the victims, heroes and volunteers of 9/11 by taking time to help others on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Flight 93 National Memorial – Shanksville, Pennsylvania

Date: September 11, 2009
Time: 9:45 am

The Eighth Anniversary Commemorative Service will take place on Friday morning, September 11, 2009, a short distance from the crash site on Skyline Road near Shanksville, Pennsylvania beginning at 9:45 AM.

Long Beach – Remember September 11th, 2001 “The Ride” 2009

Time: 6:00 pm
Location: 257 Bennett Ave. Long Beach, CA 90803

There will be a motorcycle ride leaving at 3:15 pm from So. Orange County to the ceremony at 6:00 pm. The ceremony will include various speakers including LAX Council 12 President, Darren Shiroma sharing memories about September 11th and several performers will sing patriotic songs.  All are welcome and more information may be found at http://www.remember911ride.com/pagetwo.html?1114909746828

San Diego - Memorial Service

Date: September 11, 2009 
Time: 2:30 pm

There will be a September 11th service held aboard the flight deck of the USS Midway in San Diego’s Navy Pier. This service will serve to remember those lost on September 11, 2001. Names of the United & American Airlines crewmembers lost on 9/11, along with Fire, Police, and Port Authority personnel lost will be read at the annual memorial tribute aboard the USS Midway at the San Diego Navy Pier. This event will take place on Friday, September 11, 2009.

This annual memorial tribute is hosted by the FDNY Retirees of California with AFA-CWA participation, and will include Presentation of the Colors, Pipes & Drums, Honor Guards from the San Diego FD, Helicopter Flyover, 21 Gun Salute, Orange County FD, US Marine Corps, US Border Patrol, the Singing of the Star Spangled Banner, Taps and the reading of the names. Vicki Jurgens, MEC Safety, Health and Security Chairperson, is coordinating our involvement in the event.  Please RSVP by sending an e-mail to Vicki at safety@unitedafa.org. Include in the e-mail your name, contact number and e-mail.  Also indicate if you are willing to participate in reading the names of our heroes. All crewmembers are encouraged to attend in full uniform.

Washington, DC - September 11th Unity Walk

Date: October 18, 2009

This year the focus will be to visit a dozen houses of worship, experience moving presentations from international figures like Reverend Mpho Tutu, Arun Gandhi, Maureen Fiedler and Rabbi Bruce Lustig and engage in thought provoking dialogue with one another.  The Unity Walk will also feature an interfaith community service fair for people of all ages.
