Tell the Board of Education - Garfield Teachers Deserve a Fair Contract
Members of Garfield Federation of Teachers (GFT) Local 3977 have been working without a contract since July 1, 2007. Negotiations between the Teachers and the Board of Education have come to a dead end as a result of the a $1.8 million deficit. The Board has decided to use money budgeted for teachers' salaries to pay off the deficit; despite the fact that the deficit was not caused by the teachers, but by budgetary miscalculations by administration.
Please take a moment to send a letter to the Garfield Board of Education and the School Administration urging them to negotiate a fair and equitable contract for the members of GFT. It is only right to justly compensate these teachers who provide a quality education to the students of Garfield.

Subject: Garfield Teachers Deserve a Contract
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
President Gerald Wich
Vice President Edward Puzio - Vice President
Mrs. Rose Marie Aloia
Mr. Salvatore Benanti
Dr. Kenneth Conte
Mr. Anthony Damato
Mr. Anthony DeMarco
Mr. Heath Hicks
Ms. Lou Ann Visotcky
I am very concerned with the state of affairs concerning negotiations between the Garfield Federation of Teachers and the Garfield Board of Education. According to the articles published in the paper, it is clear that current negotiations have reached a dead end as a result of the Board's $1.8 million deficit. Subsequently, money budgeted for current teachers' salaries is being used to fund the current short-fall.
The Garfield Board of Education holds a fiscal responsibility to its employees as well as the taxpayers of Garfield. It is simply not acceptable to ask the GFT members to work at a salary that does not represent their proper years of experience on the previously negotiated salary guide. They deserve to be compensated for their hard work and dedication to the students of the Garfield District.
I urge the Administration and members of the Garfield Board of Education to settle now with the Garfield Federation of Teachers. As the teachers have been working without a contract since July1, 2007 this settlement is already long overdue.
Sincerely,
