Open for Collective Bargaining Course
Enrollment for the Fall 2009 Rutgers University Union Leadership
Academy’s Collective Bargaining course is now open. The
Bergen County Central Trades and Labor Council, working in
partnership
with Bergen Community College, is co-sponsoring this important
course.
The Bergen CLC urges all of our affiliated unions and members
who wish
to gain a better understanding of health care and how it affects
Labor.
This class would be good for newly elected officers, shop
stewards,
executive board members and members who want to be active within
their
union.

Classes will begin on Thursday,September 17 and continue every
Thursday
evening through October 22. The course will be held from 6:30 pm
to
9:15 pm at the Bergen Community College’s Hackensack
Campus/Ciarco Learning Center located at 335 Main Street in
Hackensack.
There is a $75 course registration fee per person.
This course focuses on the preparations for negotiations with an
employer, including costing the collective bargaining agreement,
searching for contract language, assembling a bargaining
committee, and
preparing the membership. It will also examine some of the
alternative
approaches at the bargaining table, how to gain leverage,
evaluating
proposals and counter-proposals, building packages, and getting
contracts ratified.
