California Labor Federation AFL-CIO
We Can Win Affordable Health Care-- Help Pass AB 8!

After working tirelessly all year to promote amendments that benefit working families, Labor finally has a health care bill that we can and should support!

AB 8 (Núñez) has been amended to include significant new amendments:
1. Cost and quality transparency - allows health care purchasers, like our Taft Hartley Trust Funds, to identify why they are paying more for health care and gives them the tools to do something about it.
2. Creation of a public insurance option - a public insurance option offers an alternative to compete against private health plans.
3. Protects working families from excessive health care costs - AB 8 guarantees that no working family will have to accept health insurance that costs more than 5% of their wages.

With these amendments, working families stand in strong support of AB 8. Now we need our legislators to express their support of AB 8. Please take a minute to send a letter to your legislator asking them to vote for AB 8.

Subject: Vote For Affordable Health Care, Vote AB 8!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I strongly support AB 8.

We have a historic opportunity to make meaningful health care reform a reality this year.

AB 8 will tackle the escalating costs of health care while expanding health care coverage to millions of uninsured Californians. These are two of the most pressing concerns for California's working families and AB 8 takes strong steps to address them.

AB 8 sets an important minimum standard, like the minimum wage, for employer spending on health care. This bill helps even the competitive playing field for responsible employers that already provide health care coverage. Union members and employers already spend over 10% of wages to provide health care. AB 8 narrows this gap.

AB 8 also helps slow skyrocketing health care costs. AB 8 includes real measures to help contain health care costs by providing more transparency for health care costs and quality, limiting insurance company overhead costs, allowing for the bulk purchasing of prescription drugs, and creating a public insurance option to compete with private insurers.

AB 8 will also help control costs through Cal-CHIPP, the new state health care purchasing pool. This pool will be able to bargain for the best deals by negotiating for almost four million Californians together. By creating Cal-CHIPP, expanding public programs, and requiring employer spending, AB 8 will cover 70% of uninsured Californians.

For these reasons and many more, I support AB 8. Most importantly, I urge you to vote in support of AB 8.

Sincerely,
