Ban One Person Locomotive Crews!
On Mother's day of 2009, in Selkirk, NY, locomotive remote control operator Jared Boehlke was killed while attempting a repair as the sole member of a yard switching crew. He left a wife and a 2 year old daughter. Within days of Christmas 2009 Samuel Lundy was killed in a Burlington Northern Santa Fe yard while using locomotive remote control. He left a wife and three children. In 2009 8 United Transportation Union (UTU) members were killed in on-duty rail accidents. The sad truth is that Jared Boehlke, Samuel Lundy and other UTU members would not have been killed if they had not been assigned to work alone. Remote control locomotive technology needs regulation now, and the House Transportation Committee should direct the FRA to ban one person locomotive operations entirely, and enact enforceable regulations to make other RCO operations safer. Please take a moment to participate in this action campaign to end this deadly industry practice.
