Give All Students Access to a College Education

Tell your senators and representative to become co-sponsors of the DREAM Act (The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act). The DREAM Act is designed to allow undocumented immigrant youth who were brought to the country as children to obtain legal permanent resident status if they remain in school through high school graduation and go on to college or military service. The main provision of the Dream Act is the conditional residency status it affords undocumented students and the possibility to access in-state tuition and other forms of financial assistance such as student loans and work study. Students have a period of six years to either: graduate from a two-year community college, complete at least two years toward a four-year degree, or serve two years in the U.S. military.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

I write to express my support for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2009 (DREAM Act S.729/H.R. 1751). The DREAM Act would provide individuals who were brought to the United States as children, and who have been living in this country for more than five years, the opportunity to gain a postsecondary education and to obtain special immigration status from the federal government, which will put them on the path to residency if they have not already begun this process.

This legislation is urgently needed, particularly in communities having large numbers of immigrant students. Helping these young people attend colleges and universities will give them a real chance to participate fully in our society.

The demographics of the United States reflect an ever-changing society that needs well-educated individuals to participate in every area of employment and civic life. Expanding access to higher education for all students is essential. To this end, I urge you to co-sponsor the DREAM Act.
