Help end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity

Earlier this year, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Sen. Merkley (D-Ore.) introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009 (H.R. 3017 and S. 1584, respectively). This legislation will protect workers from being discriminated against in the workplace on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Tell your representative that it’s time to pass this important legislation.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

As a member of the AFT and a voter in your district, I urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 3017/S. 1564, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009 (ENDA). This legislation will extend fair employment practices under federal law to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Currently, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people can be fired simply because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. In fact, it is both acceptable and legal in over half the states in the country to discriminate in the workplace on the basis of a person?s sexual orientation.

Such state laws promote the policy that it is acceptable to be homophobic and intolerant of a person?s sexual identity or preference. As a result, employees can be dismissed for reasons totally unrelated to their job performance.

ENDA embodies the simple principle that all workers should be evaluated solely on the product of their work?not judged on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

I encourage you to co-sponsor this legislation.
