Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit United Students Against Sweatshops. The short explanation of this alert was: The struggle to save labor research at the University of California is heating up once again! Due to the tremendous outpouring of support during the past several months, the Legislature's committees have voted to restore funding for the Institute for Labor and Employment (ILE), but there is still a danger that the Schwarzenegger administration will insist on eliminating the ILE in the final stages of the budget debate. It is simply unacceptable that labor research at the University is being singled out for elimination by the governor, while research for business and other constituencies is left intact. The ILE has generated cutting-edge research on living wage policies, health care access, paid family leave, immigration policy, global outsourcing, and many other issues that affect working families. It also funds the Labor Centers at UC Berkeley and UCLA. Its proposed elimination is not only a political attack on labor, but also a threat to academic freedom. We are deeply grateful to those of you who have supported the ILE in the past. But this is the final and most critical moment in the budget process. Don't let the governor terminate the ILE! Send a letter to the governor now, and support the working people of California. If you would like to view details on this alert, please visit here. |
