The short explanation of this alert was:

Two years ago, Waste Management locked out 600 Teamster and Machinist workers. In solidarity, more than 300 members of ILWU Local 6 -- hard-working, underpaid recyclers, clerical and landfill workers, many working moms -- honored the picket lines for four weeks. Unity forced the company to settle better contracts.

Now the ILWU Local 6 contract is up for negotiation, and Waste Management signalled its intent by threatening to lay off 40 workers and move their work out-of-state or to non-union locations.

Waste Management is calling its plan to send these customer-service jobs a "re-organization." But that's really just a cover-up for taking away workers' voice at work and right to bargain collectively. In addition, customers will suffer declining service standards.

It's Waste Management saying, again, "We don't give a damn about you or your community."

Waste Management can change its bad habits. ILWU, Machinist and Teamster members ask you to contact Regional Vice President Barry Skolnick and urge him to honor his commitments.

Call Barry Skolnick at (510) 613-2112 or use our send-a-fax service. But please do it today!
