If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit AFT Michigan Get Active. The short explanation of this alert was: We are in a state budget crisis. To address this crisis the Governor has proposed a mix of budget cuts, changes to the tax structure, and re-organizing how state government works. Although the Governor has pledged that there will be no cuts to education budgets for this year and next, it is only possible to do that if the Governor’s tax plan is implemented soon. No one likes to pay taxes, but it is important to remember that all school employees, all public employees, all community college and university employees are paid with tax dollars. Our public institutions are funded, wholly or in part, with tax dollars. The elimination of the Single Business Tax alone will leave a $1.2 bilion hole in an already short state budget. For the past 6 years, starting with Governor Engler, the state budget has faced deficits. We have experienced cuts in real dollars and real services. There is nothing left to cut except personnel and our benefits. |
