What's At Stake?

Don't Let Them Silence Our Voices

A bill in the Arizona Senate, SCR 1036, is an unfair attempt to silence the voices of working families and their unions through burdensome and costly regulations.

This bill would make it extremely difficult for unions to communicate with their members about important legislative issues, referendums and ballot initiatives that impact working families.

This measure would also impose a nightmare of red tape and added costs on Arizona businesses.

Employers would be required to contact any organization or business that receives payroll deductions and obtain paperwork that explains whether the money that is deducted is used for political campaigns, lobbying or advocacy on public issues.

Even the slightest bookkeeping error could result in tens of thousands of dollars in fines for both the employer and the organization or business receiving the payroll deductions.

In addition, SCR 1036 is so broadly written and unclear that it will certainly wind up in court--costing Arizona taxpayers millions of dollars in legal fees.  This bill is so vague and intrusive that it will certainly be challenged in the courts.  And, it is likely to be overturned as similar bills have been in other states.

Arizona has many other pressing needs--like health care, education and transportation. We can’t afford this waste of taxpayer dollars.
