Auto Crisis Update: Focus shifts to the Senate

12.11.08

Our grassroots effort to support Main Street manufacturing won a major victory Wednesday night with a successful bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives.

By a vote of 237 to 170, members from both sides of the aisle voted in favor of $14 billion in emergency bridge loans to the U.S. auto industry. The loans approved by the House will enable the companies to continue operations through the end of March, with a restructuring process in place to plan for the long-term viability of America's auto companies. The bill includes tough accountability provisions, including limits on executive compensation and an equity stake in the companies to protect taxpayers.

The next step is action in the U.S. Senate, which could take place as soon as Friday, Dec. 12.

Please contact your U.S. Senators today!  Urge them to vote for the bipartisan legislation to provide emergency bridge loans to the domestic auto companies. Tell them this legislation is essential to protect millions of jobs, thousands of businesses, and hundreds of billions in tax revenues at all levels of government.
