The short explanation of this alert was:

With less than two weeks until the contract between City Market and UE Local 203 expires, management is still asking for a number of takebacks which would gut the contract, by proposing:

OPEN SHOP: Last year we compromised by agreeing to a grandfathered Union shop. Now management is offering the Union-busting proposal of Open Shop.  They say that they may be willing to accept full Agency shop, but have yet to agree to this and are keeping open shop on the table.

SCHEDULING:  No protections for workers; management can change the schedule at any time.  If the worker can’t work it, tough luck.

TAKE AWAY HALF HOUR PAID BREAKS:  Management is proposing to take away this
benefit that City Market employees have always had.

NO TIME OFF AT THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, NEW YEAR’S EVE AND NEW YEAR’S for anyone, even senior employees.

POVERTY WAGES:  A start rate of $7.55 for the lowest paid workers and $.23 on July
1 and $.23 on January 1.

Use the form on this page to send a fax to the General Manager of City Market, Earl Bell and let him know that you support City Market workers’ goal of a fair second contract by July 13.  If you are a member, contact the City Market Board of Directors and let them know you support the City Market workers’ goal of a fair contract by July 13. http://www.citymarket.coop/html/board.htm.  And join with City Market workers, City-Market member/owners, trade unionists and community supporters in front of City Market on Sunday, July 11 from 3-4 p.m. in support of a fair contract for all City Market employees:

Community Support for a Fair Contract
Sunday, July 11
3-4 p.m. City Market

In addition to the above, management has proposed a number of other take backs.
