Tell CVS to Use Local Labor

CVS/pharmacy was recently granted $4.75 million of New York State tax dollars and incentives to build a massive distribution center in Chemung. Although hard working New Yorkers have helped to fund the project, CVS has hired out-of-state contractors and workers to build the facility. Workers from over 600 miles away are coming to Chemung to take jobs away from local laborers. In addition, CVS is paying these workers sub-standard wages. If local tax payers are paying for the warehouse, they deserve to be able to build it and to earn area standard wages and benefits for their work. Many New Yorkers were excited to hear about the new CVS/pharmacy distribution center that is being built in Chemung. The promise of 600 new jobs by 2011 will bring economic prosperity and revitalization to upstate New York. However, it appears that CVS is not giving back to New Yorkers as it should be. 
New Yorkers have provided CVS with $4.75 million of New York State tax dollars and incentives to build its new distribution center. These tax dollars come from hard working New Yorkers and our residents should be the ones benefiting from the creation of the massive warehouse. However, the project is being overseen by a company in Kentucky while initial building is being done by workers from North Carolina. This has allowed CVS to avoid paying area standard wages and benefits. This use of out-of-state labor is hurting families in New York. If CVS is going to take New Yorkers' hard earned money, they should be hiring hard working New Yorkers to build their multi-million dollar distribution center. 
I am urging CVS to put New Yorkers to work and to pay decent wages and benefits, something all workers deserve. CVS should hold up its end of the bargain and offer our residents the opportunity to build the distribution center that is funded by our tax dollars.
