Representative Peter DeFazio of Oregon has introduced H.R. 5788 or the HANG UP Act.
 
The bill would prohibit the use of cell phones during flight. Currently, the Department of Transportation prohibits cell phone use during flight. However, the European Commission will now permit cell phone conversation in mid-flight on flights throughout the European Union.
 
Many believe that the U.S. will follow the E.U.’s lead on lifting cell phone restrictions during commercial airline flights. Rep. DeFazio’s bill will codify the cell phone ban in the U.S.
