Health Care is important to our members. Though the overall employee premium share has recently stabilized, our members have lost significant ground since 1993.
The problems of those without health care in Washington State and across the country continue to compound both health care access and cost issues.
After working on this issue at both the International Union and Council levels for many years, we are convinced there is only one way to achieve universal coverage.
I am writing today to ask you to take a stand for guaranteed, quality, affordable health care for all by signing the enclosed statement prepared by Health Care for America Now!, a campaign which my union, AFSCME, co-chairs.
Because I am part of a union, I have good coverage. But holding onto our benefits has become harder and harder because costs are going up higher and higher. Moreover, millions of working families have no health care coverage at all. Our health care system is broken and Congress must fix it.
But we need a solution that helps working families, not the insurance companies. Some in Congress would leave us on our own to get health insurance. They think it is okay if employers do not provide, or help pay for, health coverage. Some think it is okay if an insurance company refuses to cover people with pre-existing conditions. I hope you will reject these ideas and instead sign this statement in support of guaranteed, quality, affordable health care we can all count on.
