The short explanation of this alert was:

One of the high costs of health care is the cost of prescription drugs. The cost of prescription drugs is now rising at an average of 15 percent a year. We hear horror stories in the news every day of seniors cutting pills in half or driving to Canada for their medicine.

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry is making record profits, thanks to spending twice as much money on marketing and administration than on research and development of new drugs.

By "administration," they mean the salaries of executives like Henry "Hank" A. McKinnell, the former CEO of Pfizer Inc., who retired in 2005 with more than $6.5 million in annual pay and benefits. Sidney Taurel, CEO of Eli Lilly and Co., received nearly $12 million in compensation in 2005. Richard Clark, CEO of Merck Inc., received more than $6 million.

Tell PhRMa, the official lobbying organization of the pharmaceutical industry, to stop blocking meaningful health care reform. E-mail now.
