The labor movement has been fighting for health care reform for nearly 100 years and we can't stop fighting now, when it really matters. And we are getting close. Both the House and Senate bills would:
-Provide health insurance to 30 million more Americans and provide subsidies to low income individuals and families. -Benefits will have to meet minimum standards and insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions or impose lifetime or unreasonable annual limits. Medicare is protected in the long run and prescription drug costs for retirees will be cut. But we also have to make sure our representatives urge Speaker Pelosi to stand strong in defending three key principles as Congress develops a final health care bill: - No taxation of employee health care benefits. - Inclusion of an employer mandate to provide health care benefits. -Inclusion of a strong public option.
