LA Carwashers Need Your Help--Now

For years, carwash workers in Los Angeles have toiled for less than the minimum wage, with no overtime pay and no breaks. Last week, the campaign to win justice for L.A.’s carwash workers welcomed the news that City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo filed a 176-count criminal complaint against some of L.A.’s dirtiest carwash operators: Benny and Nisan Pirian, Vermont Hand Wash manager Manuel Reyes and four Pirian family-owned carwashes.

It’s critical that we show our solidarity with these workers. Please send a fax to two Pirian family-owned carwashes stating that violations of workers’ rights will not be tolerated in our community.

I am writing to express my concern about the 176-count criminal complaint filed against you, your brother Nisan, Manuel Reyes and four carwashes operated by you and/or members of your family. As a member of the community, I am outraged by the history of mistreatment of workers at your carwash, such as paying illegally low wages, failing to provide protective gear and violating other basic workplace rights.

I am equally concerned about reports I have heard that you or your managers have fired workers who have spoken publicly about the deplorable working conditions at your carwash. I understand that, in addition to the firing of three workers who spoke out publicly about the conditions, several other workers who support the union organizing effort have seen their hours cut and suffered other forms of harassment. Perhaps most disturbing of all is the news that Vermont Hand Wash manager Manuel Reyes is charged with brandishing deadly weapons at union supporters and organizers.

I support the efforts of carwash workers to improve their working conditions by forming a union. I urge you to sign the CLEAN Carwash Agreement, thereby committing to obey all employment and health and safety laws and to respect your workers' right to organize.

I will not patronize this or any Pirian family-owned business until you sign the CLEAN Carwash Agreement.
