Support striking workers!!

Workers at the Holiday Inn Express, Latham wanted to form a union because they wanted the opportunity to bargain for better wages, retirement security and healthcare coverage.  Within 24 hours of notifying their employer of their intentions to form a union, over 50% of the organizing committee was fired.

Please take a moment to call Jim Morrell and let him know that you are supporting the workers on strike at the Holiday Inn Express and that you want Jim Morrell to sign the Fair Organizing and Election Standards.

Talking Points

On April 22nd, employees at the Holiday Inn Express in Latham met with Workers United Local 471 because they wanted to improve their jobs and the working standards of all hotel employees in the Capital District.  The next day, they notified their employer of their desire to form a union and within 24 hours, half of the organizing committee was unlawfully fired.

Workers have been on strike for more than 100 days now, striking for the reinstatement of all terminated workers with full back pay.  For more information, visit www.shameonjimmorrell.com.

Dear Jim Morrell,

I have been continually disappointed to hear of the way you and your management team have responded to the labor strife at the Holiday Inn Express in Latham. Your refusal to take responsibility for the unlawful discharge of union supporters and your rejection of the principle of fair elections convey a spirit of disrespect for your employees and for democratic values.

I understand that the National Labor Relations Board will be making a ruling on this matter in the coming weeks. You need to do more than reinstate these women. You need to pay them their back pay, so that all of your employees can know that they will not suffer any losses in retaliation for joining or supporting the Union. You need to reinstate all of the employees who have been illegally fired. You need to make a commitment to stop intimidating workers who are supportive of the Union. But - most importantly - you need to allow these workers a fair election.

By endorsing the Fair Election and Campaign Standards, you will be providing conclusive proof that you support the notion of letting employees freely choose whether to unionize. These standards are modest, democratic guidelines that establish fair election procedures which are being supported by dozens of local elected officials in our community. They include:
- No forced meetings
- Equal time
- Equal access to voters
- Agree to a series of debates
- No threats or intimidation
