I was deeply disappointed in the final version of the energy bill recently passed by Congress.  Without incentives to increase the production of nuclear energy, the promise of the legislation's title "Energy Independence and Security Act" cannot be fully realized.

Increased nuclear power generation must be a key component to an American energy policy that lessens our dependence on foreign oil and reduces the industrial output of greenhouse gases.   A recent survey conducted by Bisconti Research found that 75% of Americans agree that electric companies should prepare now so that nuclear plants can be built within the decade if needed.

It is essential that we continue to develop new sources of clean energy.  Today, the only proven source of zero emission power, capable of large-scale production, is nuclear energy.  While nuclear energy currently makes up only 20 percent of the nation's electricity production, it accounts for more than three-fourths of our country's emission-free power generation.

Moreover, with the projection that we will require 40% more electricity by 2030, it is imperative that we have a dependable and economical source of clean energy.  Economic growth depends on our country's energy needs being met and nuclear energy is among the most cost effective sources of electricity.  In addition to providing consumers and business with affordable energy, nuclear electricity generation provides highly skilled domestic jobs.

I'm sure that you agree that a clean environment, economic growth and energy independence are among the most important concerns faced by our country.  I ask that you provide the leadership needed to revitalize America's nuclear energy industry by supporting reasonable federal incentives to build nuclear power plants and support training programs to create a well-trained workforce prepared to run safe and efficient nuclear facilities.
