The short explanation of this alert was:

Last Thursday, April 15th Governor Bredesen announced that state employees would have to take an across the board 5% salary cut to plug up a $100 million dollar budget deficit.

Media outlets later reported that higher education employees would be included in this salary cut.

The Governor offered the pay reduction as the alternative to closing a sales tax loophole on large ticket items over $3,200 (such as jewelry, fur coats, top-end furniture, large business purchases, etc.).

UCW-CWA adamantly opposes this pay cut proposal. Public workers did not cause this budget crisis and slashing the pay of working and middle class higher education employees, teachers, and other public employees will not provide lasting solutions.

Please take a second and contact members of the Tennessee General Assembly, urging them to not balance this budget on the backs of higher education staff, faculty, and other public employees.  Below is a form letter you can send and edit to your on specifications.
