Freeze tax cut to save Ohio services

The Ohio Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that poked an $851 million hole in the state budget by indicating that a slot machine proposal must be passed by voters. If state leaders do nothing, that money will be squeezed from local schools and other public services. It's time to freeze tax cuts for the wealthy in order to save Ohio services. I am writing to ask you to support Ohio House Bill 318.

I believe that Ohioans need long-term budget solutions that promote economic development and protect vital public services, not more program slashing.

Now, as a result of the Ohio Supreme Court's ruling that a slot machine proposal must be passed by voters, an $851 million hole has been poked in the state budget.

If Ohio leaders fail to act quickly and responsibly, nearly a billion funding dollars could be squeezed from our cash-strapped local schools. And, if those cuts aren't enough to balance the state's budget, other vital public services and programs could be back on the chopping block.

Enough is enough. Tax cuts that mostly benefit the state's wealthiest citizens, while placing Ohio's most vulnerable citizens at risk are not a good deal for Ohio. Please do not allow the state's latest short-term budget crisis to burden our local schools, cripple state agencies, displace more workers and further penalize working families.

Nor should you support Ohio Senate Bill 52, that would eliminate 11,000 state jobs. It is far too drastic and expensive a measure, and follows a pattern that has failed wherever else it has been tried.

Instead, I urge you to back Gov. Ted Strickland's prudent proposal to suspend the 2009 tax cut.
