Don't Let AT&T Triple Workers' Health Care Costs

AT&T is trying cuts its workers' health benefits. In contract negotiations with CWA, the telecom giant has proposed huge increases in health care costs for its workers and their families - in some cases tripling what they would pay.

Even though its profits continue to grow, the telecom giant is trying to use the current recession as an excuse to squeeze its workers out of the benefits they've earned. Given our nation's economic condition, a strong company like AT&T should be leading the way, showing how America can grow jobs, build communities, and achieve guaranteed health care for everyone.

Write to your members of Congress and urge them to contact AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson about his company's attempts to cut our benefits.

I know you are aware of the health care crisis gripping our country. But I want you to know that it's about to get even worse.

AT&T is currently negotiating a new contract with the Communications Workers of America. The telecom giant is proposing huge increases in health care costs for its workers. In the current economic downturn, this could spell disaster for working families across the country.

The health care cuts AT&T is seeking are even more unfair when you consider that AT&T is one company that has fared well despite the recession. Its profits grew by almost a billion dollars last year, and just recently it moved up two spots into the Fortune Magazine's top-10 most profitable companies.

Clearly, AT&T is trying to use the economic crisis as an excuse to shift more and more health care costs to its workers and their families.

Given our nation's economic condition, a strong company like AT&T should be leading the way, showing how America can grow jobs, build communities, and achieve guaranteed health care for everyone.  Now is not the time to insist on a reduction in health care coverage from workers who, through their labor, contributed to the company's ascent to its position as a solid international competitor.

AT&T needs to step up and do what is right for them and for the economy as a whole. Good health benefits mean a stronger middle class, and that is good for everyone.

I hope you will contact AT&T's leaders -- including CEO Randall Stephenson -- and urge them to give AT&T's workers the benefits they have earned. If companies like AT&T don't step up in this recession, and instead hide behind it to squeeze their workers even more, we will never be able to turn our economy around.
