Uniting American Families Act

Family unification is a fundamental principle of U.S. immigration policy - but gay and lesbian families don't count. Same-sex couples are not recognized as a family and will be forced to leave the country in order to stay together. There is a way to change this - by passing the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA).

I am your constituent, and I am writing to ask you to support the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA).

The UAFA seeks to fulfill the pledge of family unification under current U.S. immigration policy by adding the term 'permanent partner' where the word 'spouse' currently appears in the Immigration and Nationality Act.  This would allow American citizens and permanent residents the ability to sponsor their same-sex partner for immigration benefits without challenging the Defense of Marriage Act.

As you may be aware, Americans in loving, same-sex, binational couples are forced to make heartbreaking choices to maintain their relationship, including leaving the United States to be with the person they love.

I am sure you will agree that it is unfair to force any American into exile, separating them from their family, friends and community.  The UAFA remains the only way to keep loving couples together, and I hope that you will cosponsor this bill.
