The Broker System is Broken
Have you heard? We finally have the state's attention!
DSHS has been asking interpreters, providers and patients what they think about the broker system.
It is VERY important that we make our voices heard.
This system is bad for patients, bad for providers and bad for interpreters.
Use the form below to email your concerns about the broker system to Maria Espinoza at DSHS HRSA Interpreter Services and to our Legislative Department.
Your registration at right includes weekly email updates about our efforts. Stay informed, get involved.
Then mark your calendar for Lobby Day - January 18th, 2010 - in Olympia. You'll attend a briefing and then visit your legislators to educate them about your issues.
Details about Lobby Day will be available soon.
Finally, use our "Tell-A-Friend" page to spread the word to other Interpreters.

Talking Points
An inefficient system often means that the provider does not have an interpreter for the patient at scheduled appointment. Why? The current broker system takes too long, includes too many middle-men and rules that often limit which interpreters can take the appointment.
Providers are unhappy. Patients are frustrated. Give examples!
Half the $12 million spent each year on interpretation services goes to administration of program (broker and agencies) NOT on direct services.
DSHS Medical/Social service interpreters are paid only 50% the market rate ($22-25 for DSHS per hour compared to $45-55 for L&I or Courts)
Medical/Social Interpreter pool is shrinking because the pay is so bad and appointments hard to get.
Rules for the broker system are unfair for interpreters and bad for patients (example: same interpreter cannot follow medical case from beginning to end.)
Qualified professionals are fleeing from DSHS assignments, decreasing quality of service and inadequate supply of interpreters for this important work. They go the Courts or L&I where they can make a living.
