When giant Verizon Communications sold Vermont's landlines to tiny FairPoint it left Vermont on the information superhighway's dirt road to nowhere.
But that's not all that's wrong with Verizon. It has only made small investments to update our outdated telecom infrastructure and has done little to expand sorely-needed cell phone coverage in our state. A modern telecom infrastructure is the backbone of our state’s economic development.
Furthermore, in Verizon’s Wireless division, thousands of employees are seeking the benefits and protections of a union contract. Unfortunately, management has aggressively interfered in their efforts. It has used tactics like surveillance, threats and coercion, even office closures, to block attempts by workers to form a union. Retaliation against union supporters has led to unfair labor practice complaints by the NLRB.
AT&T Mobility is the only union wireless company in America, and it's taking over Unicel's wireless service in Vermont!
To stop Verizon's low-road strategy, CWA members are asking Verizon Wireless customers to switch to AT&T Mobility to send Verizon a message that Vermont’s economic future depends on a 21st century telecom infrastructure. Our economy also needs the good secure jobs that come with a union contract. That's why Verizon’s policy against employees uniting for a voice at work is bad for everyone
In addition to switching your own cell phone to AT&T, please contact your state legislators to tell them how you feel. Provide your name and address information to send a message to your VT Representatives and State Senators telling them how important it is to “Switch off Verizon for Vermont’s Economic Future.”
