Send a Letter to the Governor to Restore Fairness to Injured Workers!

We know that workers compensation reform has left injured workers in the lurch. We’ve seen a 50% cut in benefits, medical treatment delayed and denied and employers using comp injuries to get rid of older workers. We must restore some fairness in the system for those who are injured at work.

We must also ensure a level playing field for employers when it comes to providing workers compensation coverage. When businesses evade workers comp, workers are left without a safety net and responsible employers cannot compete.

The State Federation sponsored and supports three bills that would help injured workers, while helping good employers and the State.

AB 507 (De La Torre) would establish a searchable database of employers and their workers compensation provider.
SB 1338 (Migden) protects injured workers from being sent to a company doctor when they are injured.
SB 1717 (Perata) restores permanent disability benefits over a three-year period and eliminates the reduction in benefits for injured workers who return to work.

I am writing to urge you to sign AB 507, SB 1338, and SB 1717 into law. These three bills restore some fairness to injured workers, create a better business environment, and help the State crack down on fraud.

AB 507 (De La Torre) was passed with broad bipartisan support and would establish a searchable database of employers and their workers compensation provider. This helps workers by ensuring they have access to information about where to file a claim. It also helps business and local governments entering into contracts with other businesses to ensure that they have the coverage required by law. AB 507 provides a powerful tool for combating workers compensation fraud.

SB 1338 (Migden) protects injured workers from being sent to a company doctor when they are injured. Studies show that seeing one's own doctor for workers compensation injuries increases patient satisfaction, without increasing employer costs.   Under SB 1338, the right to pre-designate remains a narrow one, available only to employees with group coverage.

SB 1717 (Perata) restores permanent disability benefits over a three-year period and eliminates the reduction in benefits for injured workers who return to work. Permanently disabled workers, those who will never fully recover from their injuries, have seen benefits slashed by an average of 50 percent. That was never the intent of the reforms and has caused extreme suffering for those this system was created to protect.

All working families are struggling to get by in this economy. We must restore the safety net for workers who are injured on the job and we ask you to sign these bills into law.
