Corrections Arbitration Award Update

Appropriations Committee Approves NP-4 Corrections Arbitration Award!

Council 4 won a major victory Jan. 30 in advancing a much deserved pay raise for state correction employees. The General Assembly Appropriations Committee voted 34-14 to table the correction employee arbitrated award resolution, effectively passing it at this stage of the process.  If the State Senate and House do not reject the award (by a two thirds margin) by the end of the day on February 13, it will become law.

This is a victory for fair play and a reminder of the importance of protecting public services in these coming difficult economic times.  We owe thanks to the Appropriations Committee members who spoke in favor of the award and voted favorably.

Background Information

The correction employees did a brilliant job of getting politically involved, writing and emailing their legislators, calling legislators and showing up at the capitol at the right time.

We also owe thanks to the following unions helped in this battle:

  • Council 4 Municipal Union Employees
  • Council 4 Clerical Union Employees
  • Council 4 Retirees
  • United Auto Workers
  • International Association of Machinists
  • SEIU State Council
  • CSEA/SEIU Local 2001, including the Captains'/Lieutenants' Union
  • Council 15 AFSCME Police Union
  • International Association of Firefighters
  • CT AFL-CIO

Please forgive us for anyone we left out. This effort was a true display of organized labor solidarity. We are entering an extremely difficult economic time.

On Feb. 4, Governor Rell will announce a budget plan to cut public services and the employees who deliver them. If all working men and women stand up for each other, we will come through it well and leave our state and country stronger.
