What ever happened to shared sacrifice? As the June 30 fiscal year deadline looms, the state legislature and the governor are battling over how to close a $9 billion deficit. The Governor’s latest budget proposals would cut even more funding for healthcare for the most vulnerable, close courthouses and libraries, and even shutter job training programs when we most need to put people back to work. That kind of strategy would only hurt our families worse and plunge us farther into recession. Economists will tell you that cutting public spending during an economic crisis is like pouring gasoline on a raging fire. It will lead to more layoffs in the private sector, more foreclosures and bankruptcies, more people without health care, without jobs and without hope. It’s time for our state’s top earners and large corporations to contribute to the solution to this recession too. It’s time for a progressive income tax and it's time to close corporate tax loopholes.
