 RYAN INTL. FLIGHT ATTENDANTS

Ryan International Flight Attendants Join The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA
Ryan International Flight Attendants Join The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA
Washington, DC, January 7, 2009 - Ryan International flight attendants made a monumental decision today and elected the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) as their bargaining representative. AFA-CWA received 111 votes. The total vote well exceeded the National Mediation Board's (NMB) arbitrary requirement that 50 percent plus one of eligible flight attendants vote in order for the election to be valid.

"Ryan International flight attendants are committed to shaping the future of their careers and we are thrilled to welcome them to the largest flight attendant union in the world" said AFA-CWA International President Patricia Friend. "With AFA-CWA, Ryan flight attendants will negotiate a legally binding contract that will provide the security they need to advance their profession."  Full Press Release

 POSTCARDS FROM THE FAA

Fatigue Surveys In The Mail!

Federal Aviation AdministrationThe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently sending out the official survey on crew duty, rest, scheduling, health, alertness, and fatigue to approximately 23,000 U.S. flight attendants. Since only a minimal number of flight attendants from each airline will be selected, it is very important that you participate if you receive the Flight Attendant Fatigue Survey. The survey may be completed online or by returning the paper version mailed to you. The FAA will analyze the responses next year.

Flight attendant fatigue survey participants are being randomly selected from the 60,000 who were sent postcards from the FAA Flight Attendant Certificate Registry. In order to be eligible to participate in this survey, you must return the postcard.

AFA-CWA encourages you to complete and return the postcard and the survey. Your honest and confidential feedback will help government, industry, and employee representatives make the best possible decisions to ensure the safety and health of flight attendants and the traveling public.

In accordance with scientific sampling protocol, all data is completely anonymous. Participation is strictly voluntary but is strongly encouraged.

Thank you for your support as we continue to enhance the safety of the flight attendant profession.

Even if you have not received the postcard, you can update your information electronically by clicking here .

MIDWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANTS FIGHT AGAINST OUTSOURCING

In July, when oil prices drove Midwest Airlines to the brink of bankruptcy, management announced their plan to outsource over half of Midwest flight attendants and demanded steep concessions from those who remained. Despite ongoing discussions, Midwest management has remained steadfast in the proposed cost saving which includes up to 30 percent in wage cuts and drastic reductions to many other areas. By outsourcing 75% of flying to other airlines, most Midwest flights will be operated by non-Midwest employees. By the end of this year, management hopes to furlough over 300 flight attendants.

 FMLA FAIRNESS

Flight Attendant FMLA FairnessFMLA Crunch Time
AFA-CWA's FMLA legislation passed the House of Representatives 402-9 and is now in the Senate here it has proved much harder to bring to a vote. The Department of Labor, the Air Transport Association and several carriers have joined forces to block its passage. Please call our targeted offices which include any Senators not yet on the bill. (click here to view FMLA cosponsor list)

Don't let this victory slip through our hands! We need to flood Senate offices with phone calls from their constituents. Every Senate office, whether a cosponsor or not, must be made aware that flight attendants are demanding passage of this legislation. More Information>>
