Fall is a popular time of the year for high school seniors to visit the campuses of the colleges they’re interested in attending. Following are some tips to help your college-bound student get the most out of your college visits.

  1. Learn as much about the college as possible before the visit. Students can surf the college’s website and browse through their catalog or viewbook.

  2. Participate in a group information session at the admissions office.

  3. Take a tour of the campus.

  4. Sit in on a class that may interest your student.

  5. Talk to a professor (or two) in your student’s chosen major.

  6. Scan the bulletin boards and read the student newspaper.

  7. Wander around campus; visit the library, the college bookstore, the athletic facilities, the student center, etc.

  8. If possible, spend a night in a dorm.

  9. Talk to students – ask what they like and dislike about the college, why they chose the college, and what they do on  weekends.

  10. Walk or drive around the surrounding community.

  11. At the end of the college visit, encourage your student to make a list of what they liked and disliked about the college. After you’ve visited several colleges, your student can use these lists to compare each college and narrow their choice.
