Greetings,
IMPORTANT PENSION CALL TO ACTION!!!!!!!
We were just notified that Speaker Madigan has
allowed CPS to be added on to a bill that will allow them to
only contribute 10 percent of their pension obligation for the
year. That means, CPS will only have to pay $30.7 million of the
$307 million they owe CTPF this year.
SB 2011 is a bill that the downstate police and
firemen worked on and negotiated with their pension board for a
year. The groups worked diligently together and came to an
agreement where both entities would benefit from the bill.
CTPF was added to this bill at the 11th hour. They
did not negotiate nor agree with CPS to be a part of this bill.
This is unfair to CTPF and our members. CTU will oppose SB 2011.
We will also testify in opposition to the bill in the Pension
and Personnel Committee tomorrow at 11 am.
Please contact the members of the House Personnel
and Pensions Committee. Tell them that:
- The Chicago Teachers Pension Fund was NOT in
negotiations with CPS nor did they agree to be added to SB 2011
which would allow them to pay only 10% of the $307 million they
owe.
- The Chicago Public School system needs to
fulfill its obligation to CTPF. Even in difficult financial
times, pension obligations need to be paid. CPS is required to
make a payment of approximately $307 million this year and needs
to fulfill this commitment to ensure the future
strength of the pension fund.
- It is unfair how CPS is trying to sidestep
their responsibility by eliminating CTPF from their
discussions.
- Tell them to vote NO on SB
2011.
