How the cuts have hurt higher education
The state continues to slash tens of millions from appropriations for Tennessee’s universities. Governor Bredesen and many in the General Assembly have tried to justify these cuts by talking about “trimming the fat,” or replacing “duplicate” or “redundant” programs. Although they would like the public to believe that cuts to state higher education budgets have minimal impact on the quality of student education, we know this is not the case.
This action alert was created as a way for students, faculty and staff to share the devastating impact these cuts are having on our departments, programs and the quality of our students’ education. We need your help collecting these stories. Please include the campus or institute you are referring to (e.g. UTC Chemistry, MTSU library, etc.) and try to be specific about what the particular budget cut means to you, your coworkers, and/or the students and community partners your serve.
Our stories can make a convincing case to the General Assembly to stop these budget cuts. Together we can defend public higher education in Tennessee!
