Subject: Stop Unionbusting at the Library of Congress!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to express my alarm and deep concern over recent reports that the Library of Congress is engaging in unionbusting in our nation's capitol.

As the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and as the research arm of the U.S. Congress, the Library of Congress should embody the values of fairness and democracy. Employees who participate in labor organizations, or who -- as officers or stewards -- assist their colleagues in the workplace, must have the right to do so without fear of penalty or reprisal.

I strongly urge you to immediately cease interfering with the representational rights of AFSCME Local 2910, the Library of Congress Professional Guild.

Sincerely,

Background Information

For over thirty years AFSCME Local 2910 has worked with management at the Library of Congress. The unionized library workers have built a modern and progressive workplace committed to the highest principles of librarianship.  Everybody has gained, including the public. Now, the Library of Congress has chosen to betray that relationship. Library management has struck at the very heart of Local 2910 by trying to put union representatives on Leave Without Pay until they provide confidential information about representational activities.

Under the guise of "accountability," the Library of Congress is attempting to chill communications with employees, curtail the use of union's use of representational time, and restrict the local's ability to do its job.  Many consider these efforts to coerce union officials by docking their pay to be unionbusting. These actions have no place at the Library of Congress, or in any workplace in America. for more information, click here.
