Welcome to the first edition of The 689 News, ATU Local 689’s e-Newsletter! The goal of this newsletter is to keep you up to date on the latest news, events and happenings directly related to Local 689 members. 
 
LOCAL 689 OPPOSES METRO CUTS: Cutting services, wages and jobs are all on Metro's list of ways to deal with their budget shortfalls.  ATU 689 President Jackie Jeter disagrees, saying that it's hard for workers to survive on nothing. Watch the January 29 Fox 5 video report here.

REMEMBERING DC TRANSIT SEGREGATION: Learn about segregation of passengers and employees on Washington’s streetcars and busses at a talk this Sunday, “Trolleys in Black and White: Segregation on Public Transit in Washington from 1920 – 1962” at the Bethesda Public. Library The program will feature video highlights from the collection of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689.

UNION MEETINGS NEXT WEEK: Next week’s union meetings are your opportunity to ask questions and bring your concerns before we go into contract arbitration on the 10th.  The meetings are next Tuesday, February 3rd at 8pm and Wednesday the 4th at 10am at the union hall: 2701 Whitney Place, Forestville, MD.

"SPEAK EASY" MEETING: On February 22nd we will be hosting the 2nd "Speak Easy" town hall style meeting.  These meetings are "state of the union" meetings to discuss what we can do to make Local 689 a better, stronger Union that fights for the issues you feel are important.
